Water Quality in the Potomac River: Sewage Cleanup Letter

Dear Calleva Community,

Ashley McEwan here. I’m the Calleva River School Director and an avid paddler on the Potomac River. I know that many of you, like me, have been following the twists and turns of the DC Water’s Potomac Interceptor sewage break since January 19th ⎯  the over 200 million gallons of untreated waste were released into the Potomac; the temporary “fix” of rerouting the sewage into the C&O Canal; the subsequent re-contamination of the river via a leaking aqueduct; and the high levels of E. Coli tested in the river at various sites below the spill. It has been a trying time for all of us in the river community who care deeply about the wildlife and ecology of our river.

Finally some good news!
  • The Potomac Interceptor pipe has been repaired as of March 14th.
  • Montgomery County has lifted its ban on recreational use on much of the Potomac River including the Feeder Canal and Little Falls.
  • The section of the river below the Little Falls dam and at Lock 6 has been testing in the safe to use range since February 18.
  • Testing of E.Coli in surface water near the break (Swainson Island near Lock 10) since the repair has been below the cut-off for E.Coli for recreational use of the river.

We are monitoring the situation closely and are in communication with other paddling organizations, including Potomac Whitewater Racing Center and the Washington Canoe Club, who are using the river for training again.

What does this mean for our community?

The River School is clearing use of the Potomac at Lock 6 and Little Falls. We are looking to get on the river at Lock 10 and Sycamore Island within a week, after following the data through the higher water event that we currently have.

Riley’s Lock, Madeira, Camp Fraser, and Angler’s Inn locations have not been affected by the spill as they are located upstream. Calleva Camps at these locations have not been impacted.

The decision to paddle downstream of the spill is every paddler’s to make. At Calleva, we have decided to review current water quality data at the links below to help make informed decisions and to be flexible to changing locations if needed. I appreciate your support, appropriate outrage, and coalescence that has taken place since the spill.

Water Quality in the Potomac River: Current Status and Ongoing Monitoring

Calleva is with you and has been keeping a  close eye on the situation with the Potomac River. We would like to share our ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and quality of the water along the Potomac River, where we’ve been running our beloved camps and kayaking programs for over 30 years. Our dedication to the health of the river and the safety of our campers and staff remains unwavering.

As part of our responsible programming, we continually monitor the water quality, river conditions, and environmental factors that can influence the safety of our activities. We work closely with the Potomac Riverkeeper, a trusted partner, who conducts daily testing, reports contamination levels—such as bacteria like E. coli—and helps us stay informed about the current state of the river. Their efforts are vital in guiding our decision-making to ensure safe and enjoyable experiences for everyone.

The Potomac River recently experienced a significant environmental challenge due to a sewage spill near Lock 10 in January. This incident has impacted water quality downstream from the spill site, raising concerns about recreational safety and ecological health.

We want to reassure our community that our camps are located upstream from the recent January sewage spill near Lock 10. While the spill has impacted downstream areas, we are confident that the water around our designated camp locations remains within safe limits for swimming and water activities. However, because water quality can fluctuate, we remain vigilant, ready to adapt our plans if necessary.

We are pros at adapting plans on the river. Calleva River School had to cancel the remaining Winter Slalom program due to the spill. Aside from Lock 10, River School has had to stop utilizing the Feeder Canal, Z Channel and Little Falls.

If certain sections of the river are deemed unsafe at any given time, we will modify our programming to focus on areas that meet safety standards, ensuring everyone can enjoy the river without concern.

We are actively collaborating with local officials, environmental regulators, parks teams, and the Potomac Riverkeeper to stay ahead of any changes in water conditions. Regular testing and monitoring are part of our proactive approach, and we are committed to acting quickly should water quality issues arise.

Looking ahead, we remain optimistic. The Potomac Riverkeeper continues to work tirelessly, testing and documenting contamination levels, and advocating for faster remediation of the spill. Their recent updates highlight ongoing efforts to contain and remediate affected areas, as well as educate the public about both the immediate and long-term ecological impacts.

For those interested in deeper insights, the Riverkeeper’s “Swimmable Potomac” program offers extensive resources. Additionally, the Swim Guide provides weekly water quality updates from May through September at Seneca Landing, near Riley’s Lock. This stretch, upstream of densely populated areas, generally maintains healthy water quality, with occasional fluctuations linked to seasonal runoff and weather events. For instance, May 2025 saw about half the water quality reports fall below healthy standards, triggered by heavy rains and increased sediment flow, but conditions normalized by June. We were watching the conditions then and will continue to monitor conditions.

In light of these developments, Riverkeeper emphasizes the importance of public engagement, encouraging families to reach out to their elected representatives to urge stronger responses, including the issuance of recreational use public health advisories—measures currently lacking from DC and Maryland authorities. We can demand better from our representatives. You can find your state reps & their contact info here.

We deeply value the beauty and vitality of the Potomac River and are dedicated to protecting it for future generations. Our camp season is shaping up to be exciting and safe, and we look forward to sharing memorable, fun-filled experiences with our campers while honoring our responsibility to keep everyone safe and informed.

    Calleva Cultivates Kindness

Why I think Kindness Is the Most Important Leadership Quality at Calleva

When we talk to young people about leadership, they often think of confidence, big decisions, or being the one “in charge.” But at Calleva, where children grow, explore, and challenge themselves every day, we believe the strongest and most memorable leaders share something much simpler — kindness.

    Leadership Begins with Kindness

We’ve all met leaders in our own lives — at work, in school, within our families — who stand out not because they were the loudest or the most skilled, but because they were kind. They made us feel respected, valued, and supported, even in difficult moments.

That’s what we want our young campers to see and experience too.

Great leaders show kindness through how they treat others, how they respond under pressure, and how they make space for everyone to belong. Kindness is what turns leadership from a role into a relationship.

    Kindness Builds Trust and Belonging

At Calleva, everything starts with relationships — between campers, staff, and the wider community. And relationships start with trust.

When children feel seen, heard, and valued, something powerful happens: they take more risks, try new things, ask more questions, and bounce back more quickly from setbacks.

Google’s “Project Aristotle,” which studied what makes teams excel, found that psychological safety — the feeling that you can be yourself without fear of embarrassment — is the number-one factor in high-performing groups. Kindness is the foundation of that safety.

Kindness Is the Easiest… and the Hardest Thing

Kindness is something anyone can choose. You don’t need a title. You don’t need special skills. As the Dalai Lama put it: “Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.”

But kindness can also be incredibly hard. It takes real strength to be kind when you’re disappointed, tired, frustrated, or when things don’t go your way.

These are the moments when kindness matters most. Teaching children to respond with patience, empathy, and self-control strengthens both resilience and leadership.

Maya Angelou said it beautifully: “People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel.”

We See Kindness Everywhere at Camp

We see staff showing acts of kindness hundreds of times every single day at camp.

From an instructor offering a quiet word of encouragement to a camper who is struggling with a new activity or working to overcome a fear…

To counselors giving specific, genuine compliments about effort or progress — “Great job pushing through that tricky part of the obstacle course!” or “I’m really impressed by your patience while you practiced your forward stroke.”

To celebrating kindness itself — “Thank you for helping your friend pack all his clothes back in his bag.”

To simple acts of attentiveness — sitting beside a camper at lunchtime to make sure they feel included.

To taking the time to really listen when a camper feels overwhelmed, nervous, or stressed, offering reassurance without judgment.

And finally, to our office staff, who show kindness in the way they patiently and warmly support parents each day.

These small moments are the heartbeat of Calleva. They show children what kindness looks like in action — steady, intentional, and quietly powerful.

    Kindness Takes Courage

At Calleva, we teach that kindness isn’t the opposite of strength — it is strength.

Kindness means being truthful with compassion: offering feedback without shaming, correcting with understanding, listening before judging, and holding each other accountable while lifting each other up.

This blend — high expectations paired with genuine care — is what we call kind strength.

    Kindness Ripples Through a Community

Kindness shapes culture. When leaders model it consistently, it spreads from counselors to campers and outward into families and communities.

Research shows that emotional connection grows from feeling cared for, respected, and valued.

Mark Twain said, “Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.”

    A Legacy Worth Leaving

When staff lead with kindness, children notice. And when children experience this leadership, they bring it to friendships, school, sports, and eventually adulthood.

At Calleva, we’re not just teaching outdoor skills — we’re nurturing future leaders who understand that strength and kindness go hand in hand.

Kindness changes people. And people change the world.

    Lucy Martin

    Camp Director

Lucy is our Program and Camp Director. She has been with the Calleva team since 2006, when she met Jen Rainey, a former Calleva HBR instructor.

Lucy has two equally favorite parts of being at Calleva. One is the joy she gets watching her children having fun making new friends, having adventures and growing in confidence through summer camp, HBR and kayaking programs all year round. The other, being part of an incredibly supportive family-like community.

Her favorite programs at Calleva are Farm and Forest Cubs and sailing. Lucy loves being a part of young staff growing and developing into amazing leaders, and kind, considerate humans.

The Magic of Calleva Camp Leadership Meets ACA

      What is ACA?

The American Camp Association (ACA), specifically the ACA New York and New Jersey (NY & NJ) chapter, is a professional organization dedicated to promoting the quality and safety of camp experiences for children, youth, and adults. It supports camps in NY and NJ regions by providing resources, training, and networking opportunities for camp professionals.

ACA NY and NJ works to ensure camps meet high standards in areas such as staff training, program quality, health and safety, and camper well-being. They also advocate for the benefits of camp experiences. This includes personal development, teamwork, and a connection with nature. The association offers accreditation programs that help camps maintain excellence and comply with industry standards.

      The Tri-State CAMP Conference

This Tri-State CAMP Conference is the largest gathering of camp professionals in the world. With a community of over 3,300 that comes together to learn at over 170 educational sessions, find new products in the 313 booth exhibit hall and spend lots of time with like-minded people who are dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of children.

Calleva Leadership staff gain networking opportunities, professional development, inspiration, innovation, problem solving skills, and marketing and branding techniques. Overall, the ACA conference is a great opportunity for Calleva Leadership members to gain fresh insights, grow professionally, and continue to deliver high quality experiences for their campers.

Professional Growth: Learning from the best

At the conference, a few of the sessions we attend are focused on camp trends, leadership skills, and program development. Camp trends are important for the Calleva Leadership to know because they challenge the traditional norms, inspire creativity, and foster inclusivity, all while leaving a lasting impact on popular culture.

There are also sessions focused on safety, inclusion, and mental health in camp settings. Making sure that the Calleva Leadership Team has knowledge in these areas helps staff handle sensitive situations, improve camper and staff experiences, and ultimately create a camp culture of trust, empathy, and growth.

Some hands-on learning opportunities that staff might bring back to enhance Calleva’s programs may include, new camp games, new games and ideas to enhance leadership and development in staff training, strategies on What Not To Say And How Not To Say It, and behavior management strategies. These learning opportunities help staff create more well-rounded, accessible, and engaging programs at Calleva, ultimately enriching the campers’ experience.

      Building the Calleva Leadership Team

The ACA conference is a team-building experience for the Calleva Leadership staff every year. When we attend, we aren’t just attending the conference. We are gathering for the first time as the “Leadership Team” for that summer. We are one of the largest groups that attend this conference. I think that is one of the things that sets us apart from all of the other camps.

Building the Calleva leadership team involves intentionally strengthening connections and fostering collaboration outside of the camp setting. By creating opportunities for staff to engage in team-building activities, both professionally, and socially, a strong sense of camaraderie and trust develops.

These shared experiences, whether they are in workshop sessions or community events, allows staff members to form deeper bonds and build a foundation of mutual respect and understanding. This cohesion not only enhances team effectiveness, during the summer season, but also contributes to a positive and supportive camp culture that benefits both staff and campers alike.

Wellness & Play: More than just meetings

While we do go to Atlantic City for the Camp Conference, we also make sure we are having fun. Often we initiate and/or participate in ACA wellness activities. For example, each year the ACA puts on a 5k run on the boardwalk. Many of our staff either run or walk! We also initiate our own activities like volleyball and yoga.

This year, we reached out to camp friends at River Valley Ranch, who also attended the conference and played some beach volleyball one day after attending sessions. Our very own Dolly Lee also led us in a great yoga meditation one morning of the conference! These are just a few of the fun wellness activities we’ve adopted over the last few years of attending the conference.

ACA has been something that leadership staff look forward to each year. It’s like a family gathering except instead of younger cousins running around, it’s adults sharing their love for camp. For other camps, ACA might feel like a vacation, but not for Calleva. We are always on the move. While we were there to attend sessions and gain new information, we also competed with each other in challenges created by our very own Olivia Murphy and Jesse Pulliam.

This year’s conference challenge was CallevACA Jeopardy. The goal was to collect as many points as possible. Points were earned by completing challenges listed on our jeopardy boards. The jeopardy boards had different categories with challenges that were worth different amounts of points. We could choose to scratch off any box we wanted, however once the box was scratched, we HAD to complete that challenge or lose the points assigned to that box. We had to send pictures and videos of each challenge being completed and text it to Olivia and Jesse.

Some of the challenges included, taking selfies with session speakers, DIY backboard challenge, teaching the Calleva song to another camp, and facilitating minute to win challenges with strangers- just to name a few! This Jeopardy challenge lasted all three days. It got intense! We are one of the largest groups that attends this conference and then on top of that we are constantly running around doing ridiculous things grabbing everyone’s attention. It’s very laughable and sometimes embarrassing, but everyone around us is always so curious and intrigued about what we are doing. In my opinion, we are demonstrating what camp should be!

Along with the challenges, we also have group meals. These meal gatherings become some of the best memories from ACA. Each year, we plan meals for each day, and one night is “fancy night”. We all get dressed in our best and have dinner at one of the lovely restaurants that the Tropicana Hotel has to offer. We sit down, have a lovely meal and make some memories.

Networking AND Community: Connecting with other Camps

Going to Atlantic City gives us so many opportunities to network and connect with other camps in the tri-state area. Meeting other camp professionals is important for fostering teamwork, sharing expertise, and creating a more enriching experience for campers and staff. Collaborating with other colleagues allows our camp staff to share ideas and learn from each other’s experiences and strengths and come together to achieve common goals.

It also helps create a supportive and positive work environment, which can lead to greater job satisfaction and retention. It is also a great opportunity for us as Calleva staff to share our ideas with other camps, discuss some challenges we’ve experienced and share solutions with like-minded people. Attending the ACA conference is one of the best opportunities to strengthen Calleva’s presence in the larger camp community.

      Bringing it back to Calleva

ACA inspires innovation in Calleva’s summer and year-round programs in many ways. Attending this conference impacts us with new ideas, stronger leadership skills, and a new and refreshed perspective on how we can better ourselves as leaders at camp. Parents and future staff should care that Calleva invests in its leaders so they can provide the best experience for campers.

Attending the ACA conference is a call to action for potential staff. It’s an opportunity to join a team that values growth, community, and fun. With all of these skills and experiences, we encourage parents to know that their child’s camp experience is being shaped by passionate well-trained leaders. With all that being said, we invite you to follow the Calleva ACA journey through social media updates and recaps!

      Alexa Simon

      Virginia Assistant Camp Director

Alexa has been with the Calleva team since Summer 2017. She joined the team because she needed a summer job while she was majoring in Education and wanted to be outdoors! Alexa loves that she’s teaching kids in ways that they would never learn in a traditional school setting. She also really enjoys challenging herself in ways that she never would be able to in a school classroom.

Alexa likes to dabble in all Calleva activities, she enjoys being both on water and land. But, if she had to choose, her favorites would be SUP, Rock Climbing, and Caving. Alexa loves how she gets to work with a wide variety of ages and how she gets to do something different every day!

Oh The Places You’ll Go: Summer Camp to Charge Nurse

It is no secret that our amazing staff are what set us apart. They are the reason kids beg to come back year after year. They are even the reason other staff return for another season.

But what may come as a surprise to you is that working at Calleva will do much more than fill your summers. Working at Calleva offers hard and soft skills that can take you wherever you want to go.

We asked some of our previous staff to share the impact Calleva had on them as people, on their careers and on the places they’ve gone since they worked here at Calleva. More Places You’ll Go posts here.

The following is from ‘Wigi’ William Young ⎯ Instructor of many things based out of Rileys. He was Hired in 2000 and worked for 17 years. He married Emilia Meyer who was also hired 2000 and worked for 17 years. She was also an Instructor of many things.

It is hard to pick a specific stand out memory from my time at Calleva, but two memories stand out among the rest. The first was a week of rafting when I was a JC with Big Tic and Michael Brown. Besides epic rafting, we constructed a cardboard castle on the bus ride complete with kings, queens, and knights!

Another memory was a cold, wet overnight on a school program. I don’t remember the location, but it was pouring rain and we ran around the campground trying to set up tents while keeping the interior dry. A few teachers slept in the van and we slept in the trailer still attached to the van. Every time a teacher moved, trailer would lurch up and down waking us up. Needless to say, we survived on Mountain Dew!

Wigi, the male charge nurse is wearing a chicken hat on his head. He is holding the chicken legs next to his shoulders. He is wearing glasses with blue frames and a blue sweatshirt that reads UCHealth.

I am now working as a charge nurse for one of the busiest Emergency Departments in the country. Which, is not that different from head facilitating a large program. The cognitive process of managing multiple rafts flipping on Maryland Chute is not that different from managing five critical patients arriving by ambulance after a motor vehicle crash.

Calleva taught me to be calm during chaotic situations. Also how to continuously assess and manage potentially risky, dynamic situations. Both of these skills have served me well as a charge nurse.

What I love most about Calleva, are the friendships I developed. I met my wife at Calleva and we now live in Colorado with our own small enclave of Calleva alumni. Over the years we have had our own local Calleva Thanksgivings and Christmas parties.

a group of current and former Calleva staff singing and playing music together at a former staff wedding.

At our wedding, our Calleva friends serenaded us with a song that would have won a Friday song contest at camp. But, most of all, the best memory I have at Calleva was seeing our son, Gus, attending Calleva during his first week of summer camp ever! He LOVED every minute and can now sing the Calleva song.

New camper at Calleva holds a plate in front of his face that reads: most energized Gus. He is wearing a green rash guard with the blue Calleva logo on it.

Oh The Places You’ll Go: Summer Camp to Therapist

It is no secret that our amazing staff are what set us apart. They are the reason kids beg to come back year after year. They are even the reason other staff return for another season.

But what may come as a surprise to you is that working at Calleva will do much more than fill your summers. Working at Calleva offers hard and soft skills that can take you wherever you want to go.

We asked some of our previous staff to share the impact Calleva had on them as people, on their careers and on the places they’ve gone since they worked here at Calleva. More Places You’ll Go posts here.

The following is from Molly O’Connell ⎯ a former Calleva Instructor and current mental health therapist.

Having just finished up my sophomore year of college back in 2007, my experience with Calleva started out as simply a way to spend the summer, make a little money, and have some fun experiences along the way. I had always been drawn to working with kids and so the role of counselor, where I started out, seemed appealing and like it would be a good fit for me.

What was originally intended as a one summer commitment, quickly turned into six summers, two fall and spring seasons, endless skills, and meeting my husband and lifelong friends.

former Calleva staff sit around a table together.

In my current profession, working as a mental health therapist in private practice, I am able to see that my time at Calleva, although different in many ways from the work that I do now, gave me a strong foundation of skills and perspective that I am extraordinarily grateful for.

From a surface level vantage point, working at Calleva gave me experience in many outdoor skills. Over the course of my time there, I was able to move from counselor to instructor, working programs from Adventure Island, the ropes course, guiding rafts, and week long backpacking trips in Dolly Sods.

However, it wasn’t just about learning how to do certain activities better, but in building the confidence to feel like I was capable, trusted and could be responsible to lead others along the way.

Former Calleva staff on top of mountain.

I wasn’t someone who came into the job already super skilled in one particular activity. In fact, I can specifically recall moments of embarrassment that I experienced while in one of my first weeks at Calleva as a kayaking counselor just trying to keep up. I remember considering that maybe this wasn’t for me. However, the support that Calleva provided not only building my physical skills, but also helped me to feel valued, to discover where my passions were, and to build a layer of confidence. This became a large factor in the longevity of my experience at Calleva.

In working at Calleva, I also had endless opportunities to really hone soft skills that I am regularly using to this day. I learned to be a leader, to manage teams and how to communicate, both verbally and nonverbally, effectively with people of all ages, abilities, and demeanors. I learned how to look at the big picture and identify all the pieces that needed to fall into place to make a plan or idea work. I was able to walk people through moments where they felt challenged or scared and help them to feel that same sense of growth, confidence and pride in themselves that I had been supported to find for myself.

I learned the valuable skill of being able to assess a person or situation and adjust the plan as needed. As working at Calleva constantly keeps you on your toes, it requires important logistical and organizational skills, and a flexible attitude.

        Former Calleva staff rock climbing

As a therapist, having these experiences has been invaluable. My time at Calleva helped me to realize how much I valued working with people, especially children and adolescents. It gave me the foundation to pursue the career path that I did. The decision to attend graduate school was what ultimately ended my time working at Calleva.

It’s not possible for a blog post to adequately sum up what Calleva has meant to me over the years and how much the decision to spend the summer working there back in 2007 did to impact my life. And this impact didn’t stop when I stopped working there. The relationships that you can build by working at Calleva are profound. People that truly see you for you and accept and embrace you.

Despite living out of state now, I am thrilled to be sending my almost 5 year old son to Calleva this summer for a week of camp, so that he too can start being exposed to the magical place that is Calleva.

If you are contemplating working at Calleva, give it a try! At the very least, you will have a fun summer, way more fun than sitting inside in an office building. But by saying yes to a summer at Calleva, you are opening up so many possibilities for your life and potentially setting yourself down a path of immense personal growth and opportunity.

5 Important Outdoor Skills for All Children

Spending time outdoors is one of the most rewarding experiences for children, offering them opportunities to grow, explore, and develop essential life skills. At Calleva, we believe that the outdoors is the ultimate classroom, teaching lessons that can’t be learned within four walls.

Whether your child is heading off to summer adventure camp or just exploring the backyard, equipping them with fundamental outdoor skills fosters independence, confidence, and a deeper connection to nature.

Here are the top five outdoor skills every child should learn to thrive in the great outdoors:

        1
        Fire-Building Basics

Fire-building is a cornerstone of outdoor survival and a skill that teaches patience, responsibility, and problem-solving. Learning how to safely gather kindling, build a fire structure, and ignite it with matches or a firestarter gives kids a sense of accomplishment and provides them with a critical survival tool.

At Calleva, campers and students learn not only how to build a fire but also fire safety protocols to ensure responsible use. Encourage your child to practice this skill at home under supervision by starting with a backyard fire pit and progressing to campfire cooking. Mastering fire-building is a gateway to outdoor independence.

        2
        Navigation Skills

Knowing how to navigate the outdoors is an invaluable skill that fosters spatial awareness and boosts self-reliance. Using tools like compasses, maps, or even natural markers such as the position of the sun can help children confidently find their way.

Our camps and school programs emphasize basic navigation skills by teaching kids how to read topographic maps, plot routes, and identify key landmarks. These lessons are not only practical for hiking and camping. They also reinforce critical thinking and teamwork as children learn to problem-solve in unfamiliar terrain.

        3
        Knot Tying

Knot tying is more than just a fun activity. It’s an essential skill for outdoor adventures. From securing gear to building shelters, knowing the right knot for the job can make a huge difference in the wilderness.

At Calleva, we teach practical knots like the bowline, square knot, and clove hitch. These versatile knots are easy for kids to learn and incredibly useful in various situations. Encourage your child to practice at home by using ropes and cords to tie everyday items or create imaginative outdoor crafts. Not only is it a great outdoor skill to know, practicing is a fun way to keep little hands busy.

        4
        Leave No Trace Principles

One of the most important lessons we instill at Calleva is respect for nature. The Leave No Trace (LNT) principles teach children how to minimize their impact on the environment. Thus, ensuring that outdoor spaces remain pristine for future generations.

Simple practices like packing out trash, staying on designated trails, and respecting wildlife help kids develop a sense of stewardship. Incorporating LNT principles into family outings is a great way to reinforce this mindset and inspire a lifelong love for conservation. On your next family outing, try identifying how you can LNT with your kids. The more they hear and practice these principles, the faster it will become second nature.

        5
        First Aid Fundamentals

Accidents happen, especially in the outdoors. This is why basic first aid knowledge is a must. Teaching kids how to clean a wound, apply a bandage, or recognize signs of dehydration can make all the difference in an emergency.

Calleva incorporates first aid into our outdoor programs, giving children the confidence to handle minor injuries and understand when to seek help. Parents can support this skill by creating a kid-friendly first aid kit and practicing scenarios at home. Learning first aid empowers children to take charge of their safety and the safety of others.

        Why These Skills Matter

Each of these skills goes beyond practical application. In fact, they build resilience, foster creativity, and nurture a deeper connection to the natural world. Whether your child is exploring the woods at Calleva or camping with family, these foundational skills lay the groundwork for lifelong outdoor adventures.

        Next Steps for Parents

When you are ready to help your child thrive in the great outdoors you can start by incorporating these skills into your weekend adventures. Or you can enroll them in a Calleva program where they can learn from experienced instructors in a fun, supportive environment.

Take a look at our Camp and Nature Immersion Programs to optimize your child’s outdoor skills. Together, we can inspire the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts and stewards of nature.

Calleva can help equip your child with these top outdoor skills. Watch as their confidence and love for nature soar. The great outdoors is waiting—let’s get them ready for the adventure of a lifetime!

Calleva Community is Built on the Tradition of Belonging

Calleva is a community in itself. Over the years, Calleva has built a reputation for excellence. Our mission is to get all people outdoors, providing safe, educational and challenging experiences that promote personal growth, group cooperation, and leadership skills. Through these experiences, people are drawn together making memories and lifelong friends.

During the winter, Calleva throws a Holiday Party where ALL staff, near and far, old and new are brought back together to celebrate. This party is a tradition that brings the Calleva community together again each year.

group of Calleva staff sitting on couches at Holiday party

Traditions like this party, provide a sense of belonging and stability. It’s a time for everyone to remember shared memories, acting as a bridge between past, present and future. Also, it creates a feeling of comfort and community among those of us at Calleva. These feelings of comfort and community provide a sense of belonging that contributes to the well-being of others, while offering a safe network where people can feel supported, valued and understood. For many people, being part of the Calleva community feels like coming home.

The Holiday Party may be an event that only happens once a year, but it is definitely a favorite for most. The holidays can be a cold time of year, but the Annual Holiday Party always brings the warmth of summer wrapped up in it to our community. This party welcomes all staff, alumni, campers, volunteers and their families to gather for a chance to socialize, be festive and reflect on the year they’ve had. It’s a time for everyone to come together and enjoy a fun atmosphere with old and new friends.

In true Calleva fashion, the party is a little different each year so it keeps people interested. Some years we’ve played the classic party game of “white elephant”, while other years it became a “gift stealing competition”. Small changes like this keep the community wanting more.

This year, the Holiday Party included a collection for a local food bank, ridiculous outfits, white elephant gift exchange, cookie baking competition, gingerbread house making competition, and lots of prizes! There were stories to be told, special moments to look forward to and lots of staff recognitions. It was an evening of memories and highlights from the year. We encourage everyone that comes to bring a story to tell, a memory to share, and a dish or snack to enjoy.

Calleva staff stand in front of the group at holiday party holding presents from white elephant gift exchange.

The Community of Calleva could also be described as the heart of Calleva. Events like this, are what keep the community and wild fire of Calleva burning. The Calleva community extends beyond summer months, volunteer programs, alumni meet-ups, and shared projects.

Calleva staff often meet up to take road trips, or go kayaking. Many staff go to Colorado to work for the winter season as well. To me, the Calleva community is family. I’ve been a part of this community since 2017 and I’ve had the opportunity to build close relationships with so many people. Calleva is such an inclusive place, that even if somebody comes to work for just one season, it is very likely that we have kept in touch. Because that is how special it is to be a part of the Calleva community.

Four Calleva staff standing in front of waterfall

There are so many ways to stay connected with Calleva happenings throughout the year. There are always opportunities for staff, alumni, and families to get together. Outside of our busy seasons, we often plan staff outings such as going on an Annapolis ghost tour, attending a Washington Capitals Hockey Game, and going caving.

These outings are just a few other ways that we have stayed connected with the community this season. The Calleva Holiday Party is just one piece of the puzzle that is the Calleva Community, offering all connection and belonging.

Families can also stay in touch with our community through our social media and newsletters. We love the family holiday cards that pour in at the end of every year. Seeing the faces of our previous campers and staff helps keep us motivated and remembering why we are all here ⎯ for each other.

Calleva’s Response to the Surgeon General’s Warning on Parents’ Mental Health

At Calleva, we recognize the immense pressures that modern parenting brings, as highlighted in the U.S. Surgeon General’s recent warning. We are a community-driven organization dedicated to outdoor education and adventure. We aim to be part of the solution to this mental health crisis by fostering environments that promote both child and parent well-being.

Through our immersive programs for children, teens, and parents, we help alleviate the stressors of intensive parenting by encouraging real-world, nature-based learning and adventure in a supportive setting.

Calleva offers outdoor programs that help parents create balance while encouraging kids to develop independence, resilience, and confidence. Our summer camps, year round leadership & mentoring programs for teens, nature immersion, equestrian, and kayaking instruction are enriching experiences for children and offer peace of mind to parents. Calleva parents are confident they’ve place their kids in a safe, supportive environment that values personal growth, cooperation, and leadership.

For parents, we recognize that having reliable, meaningful, and engaging opportunities for their children directly supports their own mental health and well-being. Additionally, we are mindful of keeping communication with parents open, offering resources and support where needed, and being responsive to their concerns to reduce parenting stress.

          How Calleva Supports Parents:

          1. Child-Focused Programs that Encourage Independence: Calleva instructors encourage children to explore nature in a safe, engaging environment. While your kids engage in meaningful, confidence-building activities, you can take comfort knowing they are in good hands. Thus, giving you the mental space to recharge.
          2. Nature Immersion and Adventure Activities: Our equestrian, farm, and nature immersion programs are designed to engage children with the outdoors in a way that fosters independence, emotional growth, and self-awareness, which reduces the mental load for parents.
          3. Community and Connection: Parents often feel isolated, but Calleva families are a community that values friendship, connection with nature, and shared experiences. From drop-off programs to weekend family adventures, we create an environment where parents can interact with others facing similar challenges.
A camp counselor is standing in a river holding a fish in his hand. He is showing it to a young camper.

          Actionable Ways Calleva Can Improve:

          1. Increased Flexibility for Staff: For Calleva’s internal staff, many of whom are parents, we are committed to implementing flexible scheduling to foster a healthy a balance between family responsibilities and work.
          2. Enhanced Parent Communication & Resources: We will introduce a “Parent Support” section on our blog. There parents can find resources and articles focused on mental health and family well-being. This will include expert advice on parenting while balancing personal needs.
          3. Programming Options: We will provide additional flexibility in our camp and program schedules, allowing parents to select sessions that fit into their busy lives, further reducing stress. Also, Calleva is creating a line of parents-oriented programming, intended to enhance community connections and empower parents through a positive mindset curriculum. Stay tuned!

Calleva’s outdoor adventures are more than just fun for kids. They are a vital part of a balanced, mentally healthy lifestyle for the whole family. Together, we are not only nurturing the next generation but also supporting the well-being of parents through community, connection, and time spent in nature.

          We’re in this together!

Calleva’s mission to get people outdoors in ways that promote personal growth aligns with the Surgeon General’s call for a cultural shift towards valuing parental well-being. We are committed to being part of that change, offering not only outdoor adventure but also a supportive community for families. Together, we can help parents and children thrive.
