Here are two takes on a walk in the woods. One by a Calleva Camper (14 years old) and the other by a Calleva Staff (47 years old).
Calleva Camper Version:
My wondrous adventure in the woods was quite spectacular.
Reasons why it was spectacular:
1 we found metal
2 exercise
3 exercise
So we started out the walk a little bit confused as to where we were. But it all started to make sense as we continued on the dangerous road ahead. As the leaves crunched under our feet I used my dastardly brain to figure out why we were out here.
That lead to the #1 thought, metal. What is everywhere in the world? Metal. What do people like to find? Metal. As I set off with my sidekick, we chummed it up on the way down the mysterious avenues of Georgia.
In the end, we only found 2 pieces of metal (they were junk). Though it was quite the extraordinary ball, that we had.
If I were to go back down the dangerous road, I would have probably picked up a couple giant pine cones that could be found on the trail.
I would also ditch my comrade out there to fend for themselves in the wild wilderness as they were an incompetent fool and did not help me in any way (just kidding, I love my mother).
Joke of the day: what do you call a line of rabbits hopping backwards? A receding hairline

Calleva Staff Version
Over holiday break, I was lounging around trying to decide if I wanted to succumb to a nap. Having caught a cold from my kid, a nap seemed like the right idea. When said kid walked in the bedroom I was lolling about. I decided to see if he would want to go for a walk in the woods.
I have never regretted a walk in the woods. He originally said no, but it took little persuasion when told him he should bring his Grandfather’s metal detector. He was all in, the child is part crow. We got our sneakers on and walked out the back door and into the fallen leaves. There was an apparent trail that offered us an opportunity to bicker over the best way to get to it.
We had been told there was an old civil war trail behind the house. So, we walked and looked for treasure and kicked leaves looking for the rocky trail that wagons allegedly used to travel over the hills of Georgia.
We chatted about nothing that was interesting at all. Pure nonsense, as is the way with this kid of mine. It was a simple 45 minute walk in the woods, nothing strenuous, not too exciting, but we refreshed our brains and souls. The kid was ecstatic about the giant pine cones he found along the way and the two pieces of junk metal. I’m fairly sure he won’t remember this walk in the woods. I may not.
He’s 14, there likely won’t be many more days of walking in the woods or mini adventures of wonder, he will soon be in high school, so I’ll take this as a found moment, more valuable than the junk metal, I dare say more valuable than the pine cones, but we would probably bicker about that.
I often find the Grandparents spot in Georgia has more hustle and bustle than I’m used to. It doesn’t feel like there is a lot of opportunity to touch nature, so a walk in the woods is my go to place of solace. Just slowing down and looking around.
My family’s house backs up to a parcel of wooded land with hills. It is an absolute invitation to just take a wander. It is the type of yard I wish we had behind my house.
Being in the Calleva Family, having access to acres of land on the Calleva Farm surrounded by people who appreciate and support the concept of wander and wonder has been so great for my family. We take that mindset with us wherever we go.
Join the Calleva Family and you’ll bring a mindset to wander with you wherever you go! Find out how you can get in on the fun year round.

Gayle is our Office Minion, addressing camp family needs, managing social media content, and assisting with onboarding staff throughout the year. Gayle joined our team in the Spring of 2021 because Alex Markoff thought she might be fun, but didn’t realize she goes to bed when the sun goes down.
She loves the massive amounts of teamwork that happens across all disciplines at Calleva and how there is always something new and exciting to be involved in. Her favorite Calleva activity is definitely not the Haunted Forest, “too scary” for Gayle! But, she is always stoked to hike and paddle board and hang out with the Calleva Farm animals.
What Gayle enjoys most about her role at Calleva is involved in a little bit of almost everything, and the friendships she has made. “The office G.O.A.T.s make Calleva life functional and fun!”
