Summer camp is a rite of passage for many children, providing a space for adventure, friendship, and personal growth. At Calleva, we take this experience a step further. We embed the principles of a growth mindset into everything we do.
Our intention is that campers and staff alike engage in a growth mindset journey. They learn essential life skills while embracing new challenges in the great outdoors.

The Power of a Growth Mindset
A growth mindset—the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed—plays a pivotal role in how we navigate challenges. As a mother to teen and tween daughters, I know how crucial this attitude is to every single thing my children do. I am grateful that they have the opportunity to be part of an environment at Calleva where both campers and staff are encouraged to push their limits, face their fears, and foster resilience.
Time and time again I have seen the adoption of a growth mindset help the personal development of campers and staff. Additionally, it builds strong, supportive relationships within and outside the camp community.

Building Confidence Through Challenge
Our mission is “To get all people outdoors, providing safe, educational, and challenging experiences that promote personal growth, group cooperation, and leadership skills.”
Ultimately, each activity at Calleva is designed to promote confidence building. From paddling in white water to riding horses, campers are consistently encouraged to step outside their comfort zones. These experiences teach them that failure is a part of learning and success often comes from perseverance. For example, learning to navigate rapid waters not only enhances physical skills but also instills a sense of accomplishment and self-assurance.
Making Lifelong Friends
Friendship is a vital component of the summer camp experience. At Calleva, campers learn to communicate, collaborate, and empathize with one another while participating in group activities. One of the hardest things many campers (and staff) do, is to have the courage to talk to someone they have never met before on their first day at camp. This being the very first step in the crucial skill of learning to make new friends.
Whether they’re tackling a rock-climbing wall or navigating a backpacking trip, they bond over shared challenges and victories. These relationships, especially for staff and LIT & High Adventure campers, often transcend the summer. Thus, creating a network of support that fosters emotional growth.

Pushing Boundaries and Challenging Fears
One of the core tenets of a growth mindset is the willingness to face fears. At Calleva, campers have the chance to challenge themselves in various ways. From swimming in rapids to caving in dark, unfamiliar spaces, these activities not only build physical skills but also cultivate mental toughness. Campers learn to confront their fears, developing the courage to take risks and embrace the unknown.
Learning Outdoor Skills
The outdoor skills taught at Calleva serve as a backdrop for personal growth. These hands-on experiences challenge participants to step outside their comfort zones, fostering problem-solving skills, adaptability, and confidence.
As campers and staff navigate challenges or master a new skill, they discover their inner strength and learn the value of perseverance and teamwork. These moments create lasting memories and build character, empowering campers and staff to face challenges both in the wild and in everyday life.
Here are a few examples of skills associated with activities:
- Paddling in White Water (rafting, kayaking, SUP, canoeing, ducky-ing): Develop coordination and teamwork while embracing the thrill of the rapids.
- Horseback Riding: Enhances balance and trust through a connection with animals.
- Growing Green: Learns patience and nurturing skills through gardening and caring for animals.
- Mountain Biking: Builds physical endurance and confidence on challenging terrains.
- Swimming Safely in small rapids: Acquires essential safety skills while building courage.
- Rock Climbing and Rappelling: Promotes problem-solving skills and physical strength.
- Backpacking: Fosters independence and self-sufficiency in nature.
- Caving: Encourages exploration and adaptability in unique environments.
- Sailing: Teaches patience, strategy, and teamwork.
At Calleva, we see each activity as more than just the growth of physical capabilities. They also serve as platforms for campers to learn important life skills that contribute to their overall growth.

The Role of Staff in Growth
Our dedicated staff play a crucial role in fostering a growth mindset among campers. By modeling resilience, encouragement, and positivity, they create an atmosphere where campers feel safe to express themselves and take risks. Staff members are trained to guide campers through challenges, offering support and celebrating their achievements, no matter how small.
Calleva’s commitment to fostering a growth mindset among our staff is evident in the structured and intentional approach to training, communication, and mentorship. From the outset, comprehensive staff training and a culture of open feedback create an environment where staff at all levels are encouraged to learn and grow together. Weekly staff meetings, regular debriefs, and informal outings provide consistent opportunities to reflect on successes, learn from failures, and share insights, cultivating a supportive and collaborative atmosphere.
Accountability is a cornerstone of Calleva’s high standards for staff conduct, with every team member expected to own their behavior and contributions. The leadership team plays an integral role, offering mentorship and guidance throughout the summer to ensure staff have the tools they need to succeed. This layered approach to development not only strengthens individual skills, but also builds a cohesive, high-performing team committed to excellence.

We believe that these experiences not only shape individuals but also create a unique and vibrant community that thrives on collaboration, resilience, and the joy of learning!

The other, being part of an incredibly supportive family-like community.
Her favorite programs at Calleva are Farm and Forest Cubs and sailing. Lucy loves being a part of young staff growing and developing into amazing leaders, and kind, considerate humans.
