The In and Out Move is one of my favorite moves on the river because it works to improve your boat control and edge transitions, all the while being very fun to do! It is done by coming into an eddy with speed, carving across the eddy, and peeling out into the downstream flowing water on the other side.
Many intermediate and even advanced paddlers struggle with precise boat placement, edge transitions and maintaining momentum. But this move works on all three of these.

The In and Out Step-by-Step Directions
Here is a step by step description of how you can do the In and Out Move.
Step 1
Build speed and angle as you approach the eddy. The faster you are moving as you come into the eddy, the more dynamic (and fun) this move will be. So make sure you approach with an angle heading across the current toward the eddy.

Step 2
Take a stroke with the outside blade just before you cross the eddy line. This will start the turn and give an extra boost of speed to cut across the eddy.

Step 3
Drop your lean on the inside edge to carve across the eddy and use a draw stroke to steer and avoid spinning out. Then adjust your draw stroke from bow to stern depending on how strong the eddy pulls on your kayak.

Step 4
As you approach the current on the other side of the rock, switch your lean and draw stroke to the downstream side. Then pull your bow downstream with the current.

Where to Bust the In and Out Move
The In and Out Move can be done on just about any river where you have rocks and current. Thus being able to do this move without spinning out or losing momentum requires precision with your lean and your draw stroke.
Finally, Practicing this move will help build a synergy with you, your kayak, and the river. So master this and you will see your boat control and confidence soar to new heights!
