Explorers VA Camp focuses on some of the core Calleva activities (challenge course, boating, river exploration) but broadens the appeal with some more traditional camp experiences. Explorers experience a rotation of two or three adventures each day. Explorers are their own group designed around a weekly theme to foster their interests and creativity in an age-appropriate way. Campers experience variety, a great balance of spontaneity and structure, and access to streams, trails, and the entire Madeira Campus for an amazing summer experience!
All Explorers are expected to participate in all activities, unless they are unable due to health reasons. Special considerations for campers that have anxieties or health conditions can be addressed through communication that starts in our office at registration time.
Monday (Creek Exploration): Start the week on a ziplining through the woods and then head into the creeks to cool off! In the afternoon, explorers can collect natural items and turn them into the craft of the week.
Tuesday (Pond Adventure): Campers will start the day canoeing at Black Pond and spend the afternoon on a scavenger hunt through the woods for s’mores supplies to have around a fire in the afternoon.
Wednesday (Island Excursion): Campers will hike down through the creek to the river, hop in our war canoe, and get out to the island for rapid swimming and exploration!
Thursday (Pond Adventure): Campers will start the day climbing on our “tree climb” or on one of our natural rock faces. The afternoon will hold a cliff jumping excursion into the pond.
Friday (Creek Exploration): Campers will spend the morning on a Challenge Course element and the afternoon going crayfishing and building forts in one of our many stream valleys.
Creek Exploration: Our Virginia campus is an amazing natural playground of creek valleys and hills for our campers to explore each day. Days in the creeks may include ziplining, or using other elements on our full Challenge Course, shelter building, crayfishing, and geocaching for prizes hidden in the woods. Campers will also have the opportunity to find amazing objects in nature and turn them into crafts in the afternoon. These days will give campers the opportunity to explore several small streams and cool off whenever they need!
Pond Adventures: Our campers are given comfortable experiences with a variety of watercrafts while down at Black Pond. Canoes and rafts are available experiences that focus more on positive exposure than skills. While at the pond, campers may also have the opportunity to cliff jump, play around in the water, and scramble around the pond on the rocks overlooking the river. These days may also include s’more making and climbing on natural rock or on our tree climb down by the water. Outdoor play is at the core of all days, and these activities are tools to get campers engaged with our beautiful natural environment!
Offutt Island Excursions: One day per week our Explorers will take our 30 person “war canoe” out to Offutt Island in the Potomac River! They’ll experience the mighty Potomac River and get comfortable with basic moving water. The island provides an awesome venue for play and water excursions where kids can feel like true explorers!
Rain Plan: We are aware that there are concerns regarding Rain & Storms at camp. For any programs that we can continue to do the activities with happy and safe campers we will do so. If for any reason the rain or storm has us stop the activity, then all groups have an alternative plan and location under cover. For adverse weather (such as severe storms), all activities have nearby shelters or use Calleva buses as a temporary shelter.
