Steve “Steve-O” McKone

Steve-O grew up in Maryland, mostly outdoors, riding horses and trail running with his dogs. A product of Calleva, he started instructing  surfing in 2007.  At the age 19, Steve-O got in a kayak, paddled the George Washington Canal, and found himself addicted to kayaking! His enthusiasm, appreciation of the natural world, and drive to excel will get you addicted, too.

Steve-O has traveled all over the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, paddling the unique whitewater each country has to offer. He was part of a group that accomplished the first descent of the Rio Olapan in Mexico. Steve-O has returned from Durango, CO to Calleva to lead our River School, apprenticing under Tom. He and his wife, fellow Calleva director, Tess, and his baby girl live in Adamstown, MD.

With a rare passion for the river, Steve-O is able to share his experiences and technique with youth and adult paddlers, alike.  We hope you will have the opportunity to paddle with him!
