Below Great Falls, the Potomac passes through a stretch of class II-III rapids that is enjoyed daily by an enthusiastic whitewater community. The whole river rushes through the 50-foot-wide Mather Gorge filled with waves, boils, and play features.
You can experience this turbulent piece of nature with a few basic skills and a little expert instruction in our intermediate program. You will learn precision in your paddling, reading the water, scouting rapids, making good decisions, and choosing your line.
Intermediate paddlers encompass a wide variety of skill levels, from those with a solid flatwater roll, an emerging whitewater roll, and some class III whitewater experience to those who are comfortable on class III-IV runs. Check out our Intermediate Instruction for classes on the Potomac, Trips to rivers, local and abroad, and Trainings to build strength, endurance, and skill. Intermediate boaters are expected to have their own boat and equipment. Please contact the office prior to class if you need a rental.
