Welcome to your river run down the Mather Gorge. Our goal for this 4 hour program is to put to use all of the skills you have learned in the previous classes. Our experienced instructors will guide you through the process of setting the groundwork for your first river trip. We will do a thorough warm up and roll practice before peeling out into the current of the Potomac River and making moves the down the 2 mile stretch of whitewater. We will paddle through 60 foot gorged in walls, practicing eddy turns, ferries, and peel outs as we make our way down to the chutes where we will surf river waves! By the end of the class you will have completed our beginner level classes, your instructor will explain the next step in your paddling career, as this is only just the beginning.
As in all of our beginner-level classes, boats are provided. Kayaks are hardshell with an enclosed cockpit like Liquid Logic Remixes or Dagger Mambas. This might be a good time to talk to an instructor about finding your own boat and equipment as intermediate level students are expected to bring their own gear. Calleva now sell Liquidlogic kayaks, visit our page for more information. This class is the final segment to our beginning level kayak classes. Students should have some experience with class III whitewater and a flat water roll before moving on to our intermediate level classes. Any student signed up for a package (3 or more) of classes with us is welcome to join Tuesday night Open Practice sessions all season long.
