If you asked me what the hardest part of battling a global pandemic would be I would have never guessed, “Signing up for Summer Camp.”

Calleva’s successful 2020 summer camp was achieved in large part due to our Covid policies. In addition to physical distancing and masks, our policy describes Calleva’s contact tracing regime. Last summer’s policies were developed in coordination with the Maryland State Department of Health, Montgomery County Department of Health, and the American Camp Association and can be found here: 2020 Covid Policies.

As we’re currently structuring things, camp groups (for the most part) will comply with last summer’s policies. There will be a few exceptions related to transportation for Horseback Riding groups, some Sampler groups, and some Explorer groups who will share a large Calleva bus at the beginning and end of each camp day. This will mean one student per seat (unless seated with a sibling) on a large Calleva bus that has enough capacity to carry two groups of campers.

Right now, Montgomery County public health guidance is more restrictive than it was last summer (particularly with regard to mask wearing), but we are hopeful that rules will become less restrictive this spring as the virus wanes and vaccines are more widespread. Already, state health officials are evaluating whether to reduce some of the restrictions, especially those that relate to interstate campers (from DC) and transportation requirements. Continuously evolving guidance means that we might need to adjust our policies before 2021 camp begins (and possible as the summer progresses!).

We will establish our 2021 Covid Policy using the 2020 policy as a starting point and integrating new guidance that we expect from state and county officials in May.

Parents, we understand registering for camp can be stressful and difficult. We are here to help, and if our website and resource page doesn’t do the trick ~ call our office and speak to one of us!

* The above policy was developed for Summer 2020, because the amount of change that we still anticipate, we will not amend the policy until before Summer 2021. We will follow Federal & State guidelines to receive a license to run our programs. Happy adventuring!
