4 Skills Calleva staff can Grow and Highlight on their Resumes
At Calleva, we understand that unforeseen challenges often mark an adventurous journey. As a result as Calleva staff, our most thought-out plans are often ruined with one clap of thunder, a flat tire, or an unexpected river level. Our staff don’t freeze or quit when they don’t get their way— they adapt, they pivot, and they learn to make the most of what they’re given.
Still, amidst unpredictable moments, our staff doesn’t falter. Instead, they embody adaptability, resilience, and positivity.
2. Effective communicators and influencers
Pillars of our staff’s skill set are effective communication and influence. So it’s no surprise how challenging it can be to get a group of middle schoolers excited about a hike, or to guide a nervous adult through their fear of heights. What about constantly working on teams with other staff who bring unique backgrounds, skill-sets, and opinions about how a program should be run?
With continuous feedback—formal and informal—our leaders evolve to become not just effective communicators but influential mentors honed through experience.
3. Work Ethic
At Calleva, we cherish the core value of a strong work ethic. Because anybody who has ever worked alongside “Chief” Markoff, knows how the Markoff family value a strong work ethic. More importantly, staff at Calleva see our founders, year-round directors, and counselors jumping in and working tirelessly for the team, regardless of how glorious the job (although to some, scrubbing port-a-johns, picking up trash, and digging holes IS glorious!).
There’s nothing as rewarding as finishing the day knowing that you’ve given it 110%, surrounded by staff who have done the same.
4. Creativity and problem solving
Creativity and problem-solving thrive in our environment. Innovation isn’t just an idea; it’s a reality at Calleva. Have you seen the old school bus buried underground and converted into a functional apartment? Or maybe you have seen Farmer Max’s method of warming our greenhouse using the heat emitted from our compost piles? Perhaps you have worked through Bill’s “Lock Box” team building element that involves groups manipulating a series of gears and levers that eventually provide access to a combination lock? Embedded in our ethos is inventive thinking.
Creativity is at the heart of Calleva— and inspiring examples of outside-the-box thinking are everywhere you look. Engaging in stimulating team-building exercises fosters outside-the-box thinking. Thus, nurturing the creativity of our staff.
The Power of Calleva on a Resume
The beauty of these skills is that they’re not inherent. In fact, they’re developed and honed. Join us at Calleva, where these essential skills aren’t just acquired but cultivated. Because your time at Calleva will give you a distinctive advantage throughout life.
School Program Director
Sarah joined the Calleva team around 2011, but has been around Calleva since she was 10 years old being a tag-along younger sister to camp. “I remember getting picked up for my first ever day of camp by Matt Markoff in a van called “The Beast” that had seats that weren’t bolted to the bottom of the van. We would slide forward every time the vehicle stopped…. and I remember thinking at that moment that Calleva was the funnest place in the world!”
Sarah loves the Calleva community, the can-do spirit of the whole gang, and how no day is ever boring at Calleva. Her favorite Calleva activities are kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, adventure racing, and generally any activity that involves being active outdoors. Sarah loves how her role allows her to work with schools and scheme new ways to get kids learning outdoors. As a former math teacher, she knows how important it is for students to get out of the classroom and loves being able to help facilitate that!
