About Sail CLS: : Celebrate the breathtaking Potomac River and its surroundings on this incredible large boat sailing adventure, right in our own backyard! The CLS team will sail from Calleva's dock at National Harbor, Maryland, with a six-person crew (CLS students), expert Calleva captain (Instructor), and skipper (counselor). Crew members will learn to work together as they gain new sailing skills, learn to navigate a larger boat, and discover the tremendous beauty of the mighty Potomac. Hidden coves will be sites for overnight moorings where we'll prepare meals and enjoy swimming dips overboard. This is a great way to see the Potomac as John Smith did and learn the intricacies and pleasures of living on a sailboat. There will be many opportunities to explore historic sites and natural wonders along the river, like Mount Vernon, Piscataway Park, and Point lookout State Park, where the Potomac River meets the Cheasapeake Bay. This week will be a true live-aboard sailboat experience.
2010 MARYLAND ITINERARY:
- Monday: Meet at National Harbor by the National Harbor Visitor Center at 8am. Board USS Calleva sailboat, leave National Harbor and sail down the Lower Potomac River. Sailing instruction/responsibilities and boat overview will be given while underway. The first night we will anchor in a secluded cove and relax, swim, and play!
- Tuesday: We will leave the anchorage early and have full day's sail down the Lower Potomac River. On the way we will pass Fort Washington, Mount Vernon and Quantico. The night will be spent anchored in one of the coves along the lower Potomac River. We will discuss the day's events and plan the next few days.
- Wednesday:Get up early and continue our journey down the Potomac to Point Lookout on the Chesapeake Bay. Along the way we will learn more about the riggings and sailing a big boat.
- Thursday: We will have another early start morning and we will be heading back up the Potomac to National Harbor. We will be swimming along the way back up the Potomac as well as taking in the sights along the way. After lunch the students will be learning more about chart reading and plotting courses on the maps.
- Friday: The USS Calleva will get underway early again to make it back to National Harbor. Once we arrive at National Harbor we will clean up the boat from the week. We will head back to Calleva for afternoon council and win the song contest. Campers will ride the bus home to their prearranged bus stop.
There will be daily opportunities for individuals to take turns deciding our itinerary and plotting our course. Our expert instructors will have daily lessons in adjusting and trimming sails, navigating, chart reading, steering and mooring the boat, along the Lower Potomac River and Chesapeake Bay. Students will also be cooking, swabbing the decks, attending the lines, and other nautical chores.
