About Kayaking CLS: This is the trip where legends are made. Calleva students will push themselves through to the next level of kayaking. Working with Calleva's expert instructor, the group will monitor and assess river levels to customize the program for the group. Smart decisions will discussed in th group with thorough scouting and accepting environment. Students can choose to run the rapids or opt out depending on their comfort level. Days will be spent on the rivers and evenings either at camp or traveling to new locations. During the week expect to stop at locations like the Lower Yough, Cheat Canyon, Tygart and the New. This trip combines many outdoor life skills, including personal decision making skills, group skills, and technical skills. Students must have at least a flat water paddle roll and have attended at least a week of Calleva Kayak Activity Camp or have previous kayaking experience. Rivers, rapids, and good times, make this a week not to forget.
2010 WEST VIRGINIA ITINERARY:
- Monday: Lower Yough: Class III whitewater which means it is fun. This 7.5 mile section is perfect for those who haven't had prior whitewater experience or for those who have. Tough Rapids, easy scouts and portages, great surfing holes, and many opportunities to hit the "hard line"
- Tuesday: Lower Yough: A second day is filled with "making moves" to give the kayaker confidence to stick to the line and be able to control the boat in tight maneuvers. Swim holes, cliffs, and natural water slides makes for lots more fun out of the boat!
- Wednesday: Cheat Canyon: This 11 mile journey starts in Albright and ends at the epic Jenkinsburg Bridge. At low flows the Cheat offers great Class III pool-drop rapids. The Cheat drops fifty feet per mile, with many long calm pools before and after the plethora of Class III rapids.
- Thursday: Tygert Loop or Gorge: A big, powerful river with 3 sections of great whitewater. The sandstone gorges of the Tygart are studded with huge boulders, ledge drops, powerful holes, and good surfing waves. There are a number of great water falls that are ideal for getting your feet wet on your first drop.
- Friday: New River: Big, fast, playful and fun, the Lower New River is a whitewater roller coaster ride of towering, crashing waves on one of the oldest rivers in the world. Known as the "Grand Canyon of the East" the river flows through a thousand foot gorge with more than 25 Class II to Class IV+ rapids, including The Keeneys, Upper and Lower Railroad, Greyhound Bus-Stopper, and Double-Z, the Lower New is the ultimate finale for a great week of white-water fun for the kayaking enthusiasts.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS: The Itinerary is subject to change due to water levels and weather conditions. Depending on water levels and final river use other outfitters for permitting issues may be necessary and additional paperwork. This will be determined just prior to the program depending on water levels in the region.
