About FLC CLS: Calleva employees who are at least 16 years old and working as second year Junior Counselors and Counselors. Calleva leaders are highly encouraged to participate in this Advanced Outdoor Leadership trip for four days of intensive training. We will be heading down into the heart of West Virginia to get down and dirty learning new skills. Students will get a jump start for the summer, learning in four days the skills instructors teach in Calleva campers all summer long. Each day will be filled with learning hard skills in canoeing, rock climbing, kayaking, water safety, backcountry camping priniciples, and Leave No Trace ethics. We wont just stop at the hard skils either we will spend time reviewing the soft skills like fostering healthy group dynamics, personal responsibility, goal setting, and trip leading skills. Each student will get one on one time learning these skills under Calleva's most skilled and experienced group of leaders.

2010 WEST VIRGINIA ITINERARY:

  • Wednesday: Arrive at Rileys Lock at 8am. Drive to Franklin, WV to setup basecamp for the next few days. Afternoon well be spent learning backcountry camping principles and LNT ethics.
  • Thursday: Wake up early and hit the rocks and learn basic climbing knots, belay, and safety concerns. Spend time climbing with our newly aquired skills. Swim in local swimming holes. Time during the day spent learning about principles of group dynamic
  • Friday: Morning spent discussing trip leading and working with instructors. Depending on river levels and group experience we will head to a local river to learn about kayaking and canoeing. While out on the water we will learn water safety and managing a group on the water.
  • Saturday: Pack up basecamp in the morning. Depending on the group decide on which activity we feel we need to spend more time on with the possibility of exploring a local cave. Arrive back at Rileys Lock at 6:30pm for parent pick up.
