About Camper Vs. Wild: Last year's popular backpacking is now back and renamed to include more programming options. One of '09 the very exciting activities was Geo-caching and once again campers will seek out, and prepare their own geo-cache for future backpackers to find.  Fred does not pass a chance to cool off in a neighboring creek, and finds time to let childhood exploration take place. Fred passes on his knowledge and passion for the outdoors with an exciting itinerary of great trails and quaility outdoor skills. Fred has been running outdoor programs for various schools, and is a camp favorite. Camper Vs. Wild will not only cover the Leave No Trace skills of camping, travel, and food; but the soft skills of group dynamics, roles of leadership, and group etiquitte. Campers are immersed in THE common thread that ties EVERY one of our activities together - CAMPING. Campers also have the chance to join Fred on a week long backpacking and a one week survival camp also called Camper Vs. Wild. Campers can continue down the trail of outdoor education. This program empowers campers to feel confident and secure in the natural environment and on the trail.

BASIC ITINERARY:

  • Day 1: Billy Goat Trail "This is a moderate 4 mile hike minutes from the hustle and bustle of our nation's capitol. It's a great place to take the family and for beginners to develop their "hiking legs". For a place so close to a major metropolis there is so much... wild power and natural beauty here as you watch the Potomac force its way through the rocky crags of Great Falls and the narrows just above Mather's Gorge."
  • Day 2: Seneca Greenway Trail (Just a section!) "Running the length of Seneca Creek State Park in west-central Montgomery County, the 16-mile Greenway Trail is one of the finest close-in hiking trails I know. It accompanies its namesake creek through a mostly pastoral landscape of wildflower-dappled floodplain areas, thickets, and wooded hills flanked by farmlands. Scenery: Stream valley, woodlands, rural views. Trail surface: Hard-packed dirt; rooty in places."
  • Day 3: Orienteering Course Maps, compasses, and keen minds will bring you safely to your destination. Those often overlooked but important skills will be honed on our Orienteering Course. Campers will make maps, follow maps, and plot movement. The use of natural landmarks and tricks of the trade will be supplemented with the use and understanding of handheld GPS units.
  • Overnight Options: Sections of the Appalachian Trail, George Washington National Forest, All itineraries are subject to change due to staff/camper decision based upon skill levels, weather, environmental hazards, and thrist for adventure. All changes to itineraries go through the Calleva Office first!

DAILY NEEDSLIST: Day-pack, Hiking Shoes w/ socks, water bottle, sandals, Hat, sunscreen, bug spray and Lunch. Calleva will be providing notepads and writing utensils.
